Wireless Signals
There are many different types of wireless technologies out there in today’s technology world. The four types of wireless technologies to be discussed would be IR or Infrared, satellite signals, microwave
signals, and radio systems. These types of systems send out information in different ways and strengths. All of these systems have their benefits and downfalls.
Infrared is based on the use of infrared light signals. Infrared light is not visible by the human eye. This type of signal used LEDs and ILDs to send signals and photodiodes to receive signals. The frequencies that IR can operate are from 100 GHz to 1000 THz. The downfall is that it cannot penetrate physical objects such as walls and other obstacles. Since infrared signals cannot penetrate walls and is diluted by bright lights, the only use I can think of would be a very small office LAN or entertainment objects like remote controls.
Satellite signals are similar to line-of-sight microwave transmissions. Satellites orbit the Earth. The receiving unit and the sending unit must have their location linked together at all times to have a valid connection. The benefit from this type of technology is that the distance covered by the signals is much greatly than other technologies used. The downfall of this technology is the cost. The cost of launching and maintaining a satellite location is a ton and that is why they are leased the majority of the time. A way satellite signals would be used would by satellite internet services. A company would use this type of technology for high speeds or Internet access in a remote location.
Microwave signals is a form of electromagnetic energy that operates at very high frequencies. This type of technology is used for television, cell phone communication, long distance calling, and much more. A way this technology can be used and would be very beneficial to a company would the cell phone use. Certain companies need to contact their employees at random times of the day. Having said this that employee carries a cell phone which microwave signals are being used to operate.
Radio frequencies range between 10 KHz and 1 GHz. Lower frequencies travel through obstacles and higher frequencies tend to bounce off obstacles. Low frequencies offer a low bandwidth which can be an issue. A downfall for all frequencies is that electrical equipment interferes with the signals. A company would use this type of technology for long distance communications within their network.
It would depend on the company’s needs and the size of the company on which wireless signal and technology they would need to use. Some operate at higher speeds, while others cannot penetrate physical objects.
