A WAN is a network that uses long-range telecommunication links to connect networked computers over long distances. A WAN usually consists of two or more LAN’s which are connected through public networks like the telephone system we use to make phone calls fro home or work. There are two types of WAN’s, enterprise WAN and global WAN. An enterprise WAN is usually owned by a company or an organization unlike a global WAN which is not owned by one company or organization and has the ability to cross national boundaries. An example of a WAN would be a company that has locations in different cities or countries which are networked together and share information using the internet or public telecommunication lines to share information privately and securely. This kind of a WAN would consist of PC’s, Routers, TCP/IP Protocol, and other devices that would be used to transfer and receive information to and from each other.
